Peter Leibold is a lighting and projection designer for theatre, dance, opera, and live performance. Based in the Washington, DC area, his work has been seen across the United States and internationally. He approaches light as both visual composition and an active partner in storytelling—shaping rhythm, atmosphere, and the audience’s relationship to the performers, space, and story.

Selected designs include How to Catch a Star and Remnants at the Kennedy Center; Someone Else’s House with the Geffen Stayhouse; Children of Babel at Dance Place; and The Arrival at Andy’s Summer Playhouse. In 2025, Peter remounted his design for Orange Grove Dance’s A&I for its international premiere at the Edinburgh Futures Institute in Scotland.

Peter has also designed for the Arrow Rock Lyceum Theatre, the Cherry Arts, the Maryland Opera Studio, and Sierra Repertory Theatre, where he served for three years as Resident Lighting Designer and designed more than twenty productions, including Camelot, The Music Man, All My Sons, and Beauty and the Beast. His broader professional experience includes work with Signature Theatre, Ford’s Theatre Society, Round House Theatre, and Spoleto Festival USA.

Peter received a New Hampshire Theatre Award for The Arrival, created in collaboration with Orange Grove Dance, and Children of Babel was a finalist for Live Design’s Design Achievement Awards.

He earned his MFA in Lighting Design from the University of Maryland, where he studied with Tony Award-winning lighting designer Brian MacDevitt, and his BA in Drama from the University of California, Irvine. Through the Hemsley Lighting Programs, Peter shadowed and observed Japhy Weideman on a Broadway production and studied the collaborative and technical processes behind lighting at that scale.
